Orthorexia nervosa is the term used to describe the behaviour or disordered eating when an individual has an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating, clean eating or pure foods.

It is not recognised as a clinical diagnosis, but there is an increase with people showing this type of disordered eating behaviour. Orthorexia is an obsession with nutrition which starts to take over an individual’s life.

At The Bridge we believe that a holistic approach involves helping an individual tackle the root of their orthorexia, whilst working on the disordered eating behaviours. We put our patients at the centre of everything we do.

What are the signs and symptoms of Orthorexia nervosa?

People with orthorexia nervosa are often fixated on eating foods that are organic, extremely healthy and of very high quality ingredients, causing them to eat very rigidly and unable to enjoy life to the fullest due to being so consumed with what they are eating. If they do slip up, individuals often become obsessed with making up for it, whether it be eating even more healthily, fasting or excessive exercise. Social media has had a big impact on the increase of orthorexia nervosa cases and has given people a platform to share how ‘good’ they are being with their eating.

Although people with orthorexia nervosa may not be obsessed with being thin, they are consumed with being healthy to the point where it no longer is, psychologically and physically. It is important orthorexia is addressed once somebody is showing signs by getting treatment as it can cause nutritional deficiencies and may even develop into anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa where quality of life is much lower and risk of death is higher.
